JAMAICAN YAMS HAVE ANTI-CANCER PROPERTIES || The Biotechnology Centre at The University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona Campus has discovered the presence of anti-cancer properties in purple yams, and the yam extract is currently being considered for the award of a US patent. Dr Dennis Bailey made the discovery while conducting doctoral studies on indigenous varieties of yams cultivated in Jamaica. Purple yams contain potent phytochemicals which slow down the growth of cancer cells both in vitro and in vivo,” Bailey said. He further stated that, “Assessment of these tubers has revealed several anthocyanins and high antioxidant properties which prevent the proliferation of cancer cells” .
